Following his education, Walt went on to co-found the company Gray Matter Technologies with his friend Elliott Schwartz and then-girlfriend Gretchen, but he left both Gray Matter and Gretchen soon after and sold his stake in the company for merely $5,000, while Gretchen and Elliott married and then went on to propel Gray Matter Technologies to becoming a multi-billion dollar business. In 1985, Walt's groundbreaking research regarding photon radiography contributed to a project that was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. By the time he retired from the drug business permanently, Walt had accumulated over $80 million USD from his involvement in the drug trade.īorn in 1958, Walt studied at Caltech in the early 1980s, where he proved himself a brilliant chemist with a specialty in X-ray crystallography. Walt soon worked his way up to the international level in the drug trade, becoming a famous and feared drug kingpin. Walt's descent into the criminal underworld unearthed immense levels of deeply repressed ambition, rage, resentment, vanity, and an increasing ruthlessness. He employs a number of enforcers, and has personally killed both rivals and allies. He also comes to find his new status as a drug lord psychologically rewarding, leading him to become increasingly willing to resort to criminal acts such as theft, extortion, money laundering, depraved indifference, and murder. While initially heavily reluctant to use violence, Walt gradually came to see it as a necessity, and eventually developed into a ruthless drug lord motivated largely by vanity, ego, and greed. Walt adopted the clandestine pseudonym and business moniker "Heisenberg" (referencing the theoretical physicist Werner Karl Heisenberg) as an alias as he immersed himself in the drug trade. Because of his drug-related activities, Walt eventually finds himself at odds with his family, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) through his brother-in-law and accomplished DEA agent Hank Schrader, the local gangs, and the Mexican drug cartels (including their regional distributors), putting him and his family's lives at risk. Although Walt and Jesse began as amateur small-time meth cooks, manufacturing the drug out of an RV in the deserts of New Mexico, and being met with very limited success, Walt and Jesse soon climbed up the drug hierarchy, killing or systematically destroying anyone who impeded them. His crystal meth, which is given the street name "Blue Sky," dominates the market, leading to confrontations with established drug makers and dealers. To avoid the tedious collection of pseudoephedrine required for production, Walt devises an alternative chemical process utilizing methylamine, giving his product a distinctive blue colour. Walt's scientific knowledge and dedication to quality lead him to produce crystal meth that is purer and more potent than any competitors. Knowing nothing about the drug trade, Walt enlisted the aid of his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to sell the meth he produced. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, Walt started manufacturing chemically pure crystal methamphetamine to provide for his family upon his death. Wynne High School alongside working at the A1A Car Wash to financially support his family (his wife Skyler, son Walt Jr., and infant daughter Holly). Before entering the drug trade, Walt was a respected chemist and scientist who later worked as an overqualified high school chemistry teacher at J. White, is an American former chemist and major narcotics distributor from Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose drug empire became the largest meth operation in American history, surpassing both Gustavo Fring's drug empire and the Cartel's. Walter Hartwell " Walt" White Sr., also known by his clandestine pseudonym and business moniker Heisenberg and also frequently referred to as Mr. ― Walt's speech to his wife Skyler, explaining who he is. A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me? No. No, you clearly don't know who you're talking to, so let me clue you in. Do you know what would happen if I suddenly decided to stop going into work? A business big enough that it could be listed on the NASDAQ goes belly up. Who are you talking to right now? Who is it you think you see? Do you know how much I make a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe it.
